Drywall Finish Types

There are a few options to choose from, when it comes to drywall finishing. What finish to decide upon will depend upon the room usage, whether it’s for walls or ceilings, the desired look, and the budget or finances available.

The possibilites range from level 0, to smooth wall or a fancier brocade, see the skip trowel brocade above.

Having been trained first in plastering, and working in every level of drywall finishing for over 30 years, we are able to accomodate the most artistic or difficult of designs or drywall repairs you can bring us. We are able to handle the jobs the big companies just won’t touch.

Here’s a quick breakdown though of the different possibilities you may desire:

Level 0 -2 for unfinished areas or garages

Level 3: A second coat of mud is given to the tape and fasteners, for medium to heavier textured areas

Level 4: A third coat of mud is given to the tape, joints and screws, for a flat coat or light texture, for living areas for that seamless look.

Level 5: This requires the most preparatory coverage for a glossy paint or rooms with bright lighting that would reveal any mishaps. (Level 5 avoids those mishaps!)

Drywall Texture Types

Orange Peel – Just as it sounds, it resembles the light dimpling you see on orange peels. This is a common texture in many residential households.

Knockdown – This is a mud pattern that is made by lightly flattening a pattern of mud that is spattered. This is also commonly found in residential households and more, on walls and ceilings.

Skip Trowel – This is a hand applied broad pattern that is made by letting the blade sweep across wet compound.

Skip Trowel Brocade: This is an artistic, hand-applied finish that results in an elegant, old world effect that is mottled with flattened peaks.

Smooth Wall – Popular in minimalist designs, this requires a level 4 or 5 finish, and is a completely flat surface.
